A Bedroom Makeover on a Budget

Tackling a bedroom makeover on a budget can seem like a daunting task, but it’s surprisingly easy to get a decadent look for less. From a DIY headboard to a plush chair, a few key upgrades can transform your space without the hassle of a major renovation. Keep reading for plenty of design inspiration and a slew of beautiful images that will inspire you to take your sleeping space to the next level! [photo below via DigsDigs]

New Bedding

While new bedding can be costly, you can always find a good sale, especially at the end of a season! As you set your bedroom makeover budget, allocate the most for the items that influence your ability to get a good night’s sleep. In other words, invest in quality bedding that is comfy, and use what’s left of your budget to purchase the other items on your wish list. This Melyssa Teal Bedding from CB2 is big on texture and blue-green goodness:

Bedding is a great way to add a powerful accent color to your space. The deep rose hue of the bedding, flowers and artwork below creates a gorgeous contrast that gives this bedroom an upscale feel. [featured at Luxxu]

As you shop for bedding, don’t hesitate to hit retail outlets that feature designer bedding at a discount. Last season’s leftovers can bring just as big of a “wow factor” as this season’s priciest picks.

A DIY Headboard

There’s nothing that brings elegance to your bedroom like an eye-catching headboard. If you take a DIY approach, you can get a decadent look on a budget. For example, creating a “headboard” by hanging curtains behind a platform bed will add height and interest to your space. You can also use wallpaper to create a faux headboard for your bed, adding just the right amount of drama! Another idea: using a folding partition (shown below). As you brainstorm DIY possibilities, don’t hesitate to get extra creative. Melamine shelving and fabric trim combine in the headboard below from Rosyscription, featured at Bob Vila:

Even a well-positioned piece of artwork can provide the contrast and backing that’s needed to offset an inexpensive platform bed. Purchasing a painting that creates just the look you want will do wonders. On a tight budget? Create the artwork yourself! [photo via HauteLook, painting no longer available]

Comfy Seating

Is comfy seating an absolute must for your bedroom? No. But it sure does add elegance and that extra “cushy” something! Perhaps it’s the promise of taking time to sit and enjoy the view. At the very least, it’s a place for you to lay out your clothing for the next day or set your favorite pillow. This Velvet Elowen Chair from Anthropologie features plush upholstery. Aren’t the brass legs a nice touch? If you like what you see, check out the armchair version.

You can always find a special bench or chair on sale, especially when you visit sites such as Overstock.com. See what’s left of your budget and search for lovely seating options in your price point. Below we see the Furniture of America Cisce Contemporary Fabric Button Tufted Acrylic Bench. Button tufting and glam legs make this seating option anything but thrifty:

A New Rug

Another great item to buy on sale for your bedroom makeover? A new rug! Bring the luxe look to your floor and warm up your space with the colors and patterns of your choice. This Lucci Grey and Teal Rug from CB2 is a hand-tufted pile rug that brigs a vintage Italian look home with modern flair:

For a different look, check out CB2’s Ombre Teal Rug, featuring hand-loomed New Zealand wool. A gradient effect is the result, creating a burst of color that can round out the palette of your new bedroom:

Here’s a closer view of the rug in all of its ombre glory:

Think of your bedroom rug as an accent wall–for the floor! With one purchase you can cover a lot of ground. That’s budget-friendly design at its finest.

Decadent Details

Last but not least, don’t forget that the beauty is in the details. Little things mean a lot when it comes to elevating your sleeping space. This Shelly Round Velvet Pillow in Green from Urban Outfitters features radial stitching and scalloped edges. Why not enjoy an accent pillow that looks good enough to eat?!

CB2’s Serena Teal Blue Vase celebrates shades of blue with a reactive glaze and a bold round form. The only thing more beautiful is the end result of adding flowers to the mix! Then again, this piece can truly stand on its own.

Unexpected striking details are hard to ignore, and this Striped Box from ferm LIVING is one of our very favorite finds. Can you believe that it’s constructed of cardboard?!

We’ll leave you with this gorgeous guest room makeover from Sugar & Cloth. How many decadent details can you spot? From modern lighting to brassy accents, the result is a visually rich yet clean, unfussy space.

Happy decorating!
