Implementing Neon Colors Tastefully: 17 Design Ideas

While some homeowners associate neon colors with vulgar night clubs and chintzy 1980s fashion trends, others have found a way to implement these shades in a way that is artistic, unique and balanced. In many ways, implementing neon colors adds another dimension to your home while exemplifying your own personal taste and penchant for unconventional design. If you’re still not convinced, consider a few helpful ideas for including neon tastefully.

When adding neon to your existing décor, choose solid colors instead of patterns. Neon is lively and exciting, but it can also be harsh and overbearing. The last thing you want to do is send your guests into an epileptic seizure over the pattern of your sofa. Instead, add the color in solid chunks. For example, a hot pink or bright yellow neon lacquered coffee table or a large neon colored vase atop a neutral colored side table.

Tone down the rest of the room. Neon makes a big statement all on its own – no need for any conflicting design. In order to enhance your neon shades without turning your room into a cheesy teen club, use plenty of balancing neutral colors. For example, neon throw pillows look best upon black, white or gray furniture.

Use your neon elements to highlight specific items in your room. For example, if you have a particular photo or black and white piece of wall art that you want to accent, place it inside a neon colored frame. Additionally, your neon touch does not have to be a moveable item – it can also be a door or accent wall.

Finally, remember that neon isn’t for everyone. If you’re hard pressed to find a neon element that you feel fits within your home, it may be because it simply isn’t your style. Never force an idea that doesn’t feel natural.
