California beach house by Meier and Palladino, intense white and ocean

This white giant by Richard Meier and Michael Palladino is an example of beautiful and refined design, albeit in a typical shape for a California beach residence.

The glass ceilings and walls allow the endless blue of sea and sky to complement the shining, almost unbroken white of interiors and furnishing. While so much brightness may be oppressive, the refined art collection of the clients provide for some chromatic intensity and exuberance. The rooms are glass boxes for the light to shine through, while the planes, support elements and wall panels, all white, intertwine playfully against the sky brought in by these endless windows.

Sow House by SAOTA Architecture: Home, Office and Spa in One

This spectacular complex by SAOTA encompasses a home and office, two separate structures connected with an underground oasis of hi tech, state of the art indulgence and entertainment, on the shore of Lake Geneva in Swizerland.

The dramatic main house is made up of rounded cubes and triangular masses, forming an L shaped living space. It houses the gigantic, two story, airy living room, light flooded and arranged with splendid lounge furniture , a colorful six foot painting by Francoise Nielly and a horse statue, among other decadent features. The façade is fluidly fringed by a black roof cornice flowing into a wedge shaped support element on the far corner, giving a magnificent illusion of scale.

The adjoining block shaped building features double façade, a glass sheet covered by a wall of staggered white stone blocks filtering the light in narrow strips, into a poetic Scandinavian inspired living space with cream and sand tones and the wood burning fireplace with a slender cast iron canopy.

The both fun and challenging part of Sow House is in the underground, next to the office, featuring a spa, sauna, pool and cinema.

The creative designers from Bittoni Design Studio have recently completed a modernist community house project in Los Angeles, California. Dubbed the Evans House, it’s a successful attempt to remodel a building into something a lot more contemporary to get the eye. One of the key points of the project was to shape an elevated space on top of the kitchen so that it’s not disconnected from the remaining part of the room. In South California, even though indoor/outdoor living is taken for granted in a big way, the elevation of the site made it a lot easier to connect to the atmosphere than to the landscape. Looks like a piece of art influenced by the sky. We love it!
