DIY Plant Stand Ideas

Let’s start with the plant stands, because even if you plan on crafting the perfect planter, you’ll need a place to put it! Here’s a new project from A Beautiful Mess–a DIY Midcentury-Style Plant Stand! Given how retr0-fabulous it is, you’ll be shocked by the easy-to-follow process involved in bringing it to life!

For one more Midcentury-style plant stand from Mandi of A Beautiful Mess, check out this two-tiered stand tutorial, which involves the use of pre-cut wooden circles and dowels. Easy to craft and wonderfully modern!

I’ve previously shared this Concrete and Copper Plant Stand project from Claire Zinnecker of Camille Styles, but it’s perfect for today’s post. So once again it makes an appearance! The look is raw, modern and fabulous, especially given the current trend of celebrating materials and simple forms!

From circles to squares! This clean-lined modern plant stand from Homey Oh My! is made of wood and ceramic tile. I love that you can personalize the look with the tile of your choice:

This DIY Wooden Plant Stand from blogger Elise Blaha Cripe gives you plenty of room to display an army of plants. While many of today’s featured projects involve covering planters with paint, I like how the pics that accompany this one feature terracotta pots in all of their earthy glory!

Isn’t this DIY Hanging Garden from HomeMade Modern a contemporary work of art?! The clean lines, the uniform rows of crisp plants–so divine! Would you believe me if I told you that you can craft your own for $30 in 2 hours? Believe it!

Don’t feel like crafting? Use a ladder. Yes, a ladder! Leave it earthy or paint it for a modern look–you decide. Just make sure you give it a dose of personality, like this ladder plant stand from Funky Junk Interiors:

And while this plant stand is for sale (rather than being a DIY idea), I’m getting inspired just looking at it. I spy a project coming on, and I wonder if a fold-up step stool and some long trays might be my materials of choice… [from Gardenista]

DIY Planter Projects

Now on to the planters… One of the projects that inspired today’s post is this DIY Modern Pillar Planter idea from Curbly (shown below). I came across this idea yesterday while researching my piece on creating an outdoor lounge. I love the fact that PVC pipe is involved, especially since it can add much-needed height to an outdoor vignette:

Making this DIY Modern Planter from Seattle Refined is as easy as buying two pots (with any design on them) from the dollar store, gluing them together, then spray painting them the color of your choice!

These DIY Paint-Dipped Ceramic Pots are so on-trend! Using affordable planters from IKEA and leftover paint samples, Heather from The Lovely Cupboard created a unique project that reflects a clever approach to design:

Got an old file cabinet? Turn it into a planter! Remove the drawers, tilt it horizontally, add a coat of Rustoleum paint to prevent rusting, and you’re in business! For the full tutorial, head on over to Boopy Projects.

Since we’re on the topic of old cabinets, here’s one more fabulous project from HomeMade Modern. It’s a DIY Concrete Planter, made from an old cabinet, Quikrete, foam insulation and a few other key ingredients. Casters make it easy to move, and a spigot provides drainage. I’ll end today’s post with three planter projects that I’ve created myself and featured right here at Decoist. That’s right–they’re Decoist originals! No, I’m not trying to toot my own horn.  But given how easy these are to craft, I just had to mention them. I’ve tested them out, and I know they hold up over time! Let’s start with the simplest idea of all–these Two-Tone Painted Pots. All you need is painter’s tape, sponge brushes and the paint of your choice to create basic geometric designs on terracotta pots:

This next DIY Planter was once a votive candle holder. The openings that once held candles now hold plants! I can honestly say that succulents work best for this project, especially if your votive holder is a shallow one. Check out the full tutorial here.

And last but not least, we have this DIY Modern Hanging Planter, which works best when you use a lightweight pot to create the finished product. And if you start with a plastic pot, a Crop-A-Dile tool is likely a better, safer option than a drill for making those holes on either side! Funny how an inexpensive pot, some parachute cord and a shower ring can create a functional, modern design on a budget!

Did you notice the prevalence of natural wood, as well as hues such as white, yellow and blue in today’s post?! Sometimes clean and crisp neutrals are the way to go, but a bold dose of color never hurts. Happy crafting!
